My Presentation
...about that. I absolutely hate public speaking. I have no idea why, but I think I have some idea. I didn't mind it until I was in 6th grade and my teacher, Mrs. Fells (I still remember that evil woman's name), made us memorize poems each week and say them in front of the class. Well, that was fine and all since I was basically the class clown so whatever I did was just a joke. I decided to memorize the longest poem in the book to impress this woman because I knew she hated me with a passion. Well, I memorized it all fine and dandy. I went up there and she stared at me with these piercing eyes that were like daggers to my face. I immediately froze up and no words would come out of my mouth. She made me sit down and gave me a 0 and then went on to lecture me about how I should've picked an easier poem. I mean, damn, give me some credit for trying or something. And it's funny that she told me I should've done something easier. Shouldn't she be encouraging me to try things that are a bit challenging? Way to go Mrs. Fells. Whatever. That kind of started the whole thing. I've been nervous ever since. But, what I should've done (which I didn't think about AT ALL), was doing a powerpoint. One, I wouldn't have repeated myself a bunch. Two, it would've kept me on track for what I wanted to talk about. And three, I probably would've been a little more comfortable doing that so everyone wasn't just staring at me. They would've had something else to hold their attention. I had so much to say, but once I got up there, it all left my mind and I just rambled on like an idiot. But that's okay. At least I know not to just wing it anymore. I need something to help me stay on track.

Elementary Education
I'm interested in elementary education and I hope to be an elementary school teacher (obviously). It was something that I just started to realize that I wanted to do and I hope that I stick with it because not knowing what I want to do is quite annoying. I never thought about boys and girls learning at a different pace and in a different way. But her thought about how boys feel like it's a girls education they're getting kind of makes sense. I don't know if it's actually true or not because I'm not a boy, but it's interesting to see someone think this way and try to come up with ways to integrate ways that boys will be more interested in learning. I feel that if they did have more things that boys are interested in, then they will be more likely to pay attention. I'm not sure that they don't think they've learned anything, though, when coming out of elementary school because I know a lot of boys who were a lot smarter than me in elementary school. It's a cool concept though to think about.

Study in the Starbucks
http://fergyson.glogster.com/starbucks/
So, I did my library assignment on studying in the Starbucks. Basically, I picked pictures that correlate to studying and to the Starbucks and made them into a poster. I added sketchy blurbs because I felt that they were a little casual and related more to young adults than a straight forward blurb that looked really serious. You will notice that I also added random splotches of black. I did this because honestly, it reminded me of spilled coffee. But that's just me. The poster is pretty chill and casual and I feel that it doesn't make the Starbucks look like a place to just drink coffee and leave. The atmosphere is welcoming and attracts people in with all the tables and accommodations for studying. I personally love the Starbucks in the Hodges Library and I really wish more people would appreciate the space they give students for studying.

Persepolis (after I researched it)
I'm not a history person so doing research on the film was really difficult and boring to me. Go figure! But, I found a lot of interesting information about the Islamic Revolution and the time period. Now, I'm not going to go on to explain what I found since I still don't like history, but it made the film more intersting to me and made me want to watch the rest of the movie. But, the internet wasn't working when I wanted to watch it so I didn't really get too far past where we stopped in class. But from what I did see, it's actually an interesting movie. And with the way Marjane set the tones and moods in the film were without a doubt amazing. In my opinion, the audience could really connect with the emotions in the film. And in the beginning, when she puts the veil on, it really set up the rest of the movie and was a good way (in my opinion) to introduce a flashback. I don't know, I'm not into history or cartoons or anything like that, but I think the movie is actually interesting and is quite informative.
Persepolis
This is a late post I was supposed to do last week before I researched the movie for my paper. So here are my initial thoughts: Honestly, this movie didn't look interesting to me at all. Like, at all. I'm not into cartoons or even history for that matter. And after we finished watching it, I had no clue what to even think about the movie. All I knew was there was Marjane and her family and she wore punk clothes. That's about all I understood. Why everyone was so scared and everyone was dying was beyond me. I can only guess that the government wasn't what everyone thought it would be and everyone is freaking out about the economy. I say that because of those two women fighting in the grocery store over some food. I don't really know. But I think the director did a good job with the different moods played in the movie. I feel like I could really feel the emotions going on in the movie. Whether or not I understood it was irrelevant I suppose because I could connect with the characters in time where they felt scared or upset. I'm not too sure what was going on, but I think it was kind of interesting.

Children of Men (part two)
Now that the movie is over, it does create a little more clarity on what was actually going on in the movie. Still, there are a lot of things that are unclear, yet that was up to the director. I would still like to know why the human race couldn't have any more kids and why people wanted to kill the baby. Yet, towards the end, everyone was in awe of the baby and the fighting ceased for a few moments to stare and appreciate the life that was created. That surprised me a little. Also, what was going on in the rest of the world? And did the baby and its mother end up getting to a safe place? So many questions, but no real answers. That's okay, though. I feel like being able to guess and use my own imagination works just as well as not really knowing what happened.

Children of Men
Honestly, I have no idea what is going on in this movie. I can only make a guess and even that isn't saying much. For some unknown reason, the fertilization rate is decreasing and women are no longer having children. With only one group (I forgot the name), making a safe haven for humans indicates that something is going wrong in the government or they are trying to control the population. With one girl being pregnant, she needs the help of adults who kind of have an idea of what is going on because she has never seen a pregnant woman before. A group she thought was safe actually wants to kill her baby. But why? Maybe they feel the government will come after them as a group if they find out about the baby. Maybe the group is part of the government and wants to find answers as to why women cannot have babies anymore. But, could the government be directly involved with this phenomenon to create a certain type of population in society? I can only make guesses because this movie is extremely different than most and one that can be open for interpretation.

Facebook Addiction
Why is it that people feel the need to get on Facebook literally every day? I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that I don't fall into this category because I do tend to get on Facebook frequently because I like to see what people are doing. Or in other words, creep. Don't pretend that you guys don't do it, too. Mostly, I get on to stay in touch with my friends back in Nashville and see how they're doing. But it tends to become a distraction at the worst times. I also read posts from other people saying that Facebook is such an addiction and they honestly can't stay off of it to get their homework done. I, personally, can stay off and finish my school work, but for some people, they just seem to have an addiction problem. But, who's to judge what people do with their free time?

Media in our everyday lives
According to Nielsen Media Research, there are 2.73 television sets in the typical home and only 2.55 people. Seeing as there are more TV sets in the home than people, that says something about our society today. As reliant as we are today on TV to entertain us, I'm surprised kids have any social skills whatsoever. As depicted in the image above, kids will have a life filled with media. Seeing as almost every household has a television that is probably constantly on, kids will learn from what they see on TV. The background creates a dark, scary environment that shows the isolation the child may find itself in one day. The fact that the child is staring into the audiences eyes depicts clearly how media constantly affects its life and how that child will one day act. Instead of families raising their kids, they have the television do that for them. There are shows that teach kids how to read, write, and talk without ever having to open a real book. The lack of family interaction with children has limited the social skills that children really need to eventually become successful adults.
